History of Coir
The history explains different stories on the birth of the golden fibre.
The coir industry, particularly in Kerala, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, with Alleppey (Alappuzha) as its nerve center. Coir, the fiber extracted from coconut husks, has been used for ropes, mats, and other products for centuries, with early evidence suggesting its use in maritime applications. The industry experienced growth in Kerala, especially after the arrival of the Portuguese, and it became a major cottage industry employing a large workforce.
